Re-inhabitating the Heygate

My approach to this project is unconventional; a “non-masterplan plan” conveyed through a fictional, illustrated narrative. In reality, the residents of the Heygate Estate in Elephant and Castle are currently being evicted with a view to demolishing it according to a masterplan that relates little to its context. This provides a jumping off point for my story which is recounted through the lives of several characters, who along with a group of other former residents, re-appropriate the estate after demolition halts and the estate is left derelict for a number of years. While the Heygate sits unused and partially demolished, forces of nature begin taking over the site, which the returning residents use to their advantage in creating a new emergent, hybrid form of urbanism. Through a series of small-scale urban interventions executed over several decades, the site is transformed into a liveable, flexible place; a contrast to the functionalist, inhuman character of the estate’s original incarnation.
